Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service

Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health ServiceCommissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health ServiceHoused under the Department of Health and Human Services, officers in theCommissioned Corpsof the U.S. Public Health Service serve in a variety of health-related roles around the nation. These health care professionals cooperate with government agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to promote the health and well-being of American citizens. History of the Commissioned Corps By order of President John Adams, the Commissioned Corpsemployed doctors in the Marine Hospital Service to take care of ill and injured sailors. The goal was to prevent the spread of disease as sailors re-entered the country from foreign locations. By 1871 America had become a complex place, and it became more difficult to administer health care to the Navy. The countrys first surgeon general decided to simplify the equation by imposing military discipline on doctors of the Marine Hospital Service, setting them up with naval ranks and uniforms. Eventually, the growing needs of the nation led to greater responsibilities for the corps, which provided services to the general public including the control and prevention of disease. (The CDC wouldnt be conceived until 1946.) By 1912 its expanded scope earned the Marine Hospital Service the more apt title of Public Health Service, though the Commissioned Corps remains grounded in its naval roots as one of the two uniformed services that are not technically in the U.S. military. Requirements to Serve in theCommissioned Corps The two most important requirements for service with the Commissioned Corpsare education and licensure. Like the Armed Forces direct commissioning programs for medical professionals, the Corps doesnt take raw recruits they look for those who have already invested in an advanced education and established themselves as civilian professionals. Some of the positions in the Commissioned Corps include PhysiciansRegistered Nurses (with bachelors or masters degree only)DentistsSocial workersPsychiatrists and psychologistsDietitians (bachelors to doctorate)Allied professions, such as dental hygienists and physician assistantsPharmacists Opportunities to join the Commissioned Corpsin one of these professions may vary from year to year depending on need. Potentialofficers must be citizens of the United States under the age of 44 and pass medical and physical examinations. Though recruited as civilian professionals, hopefuls must also be prepared to conform to height, weight, and grooming standards similar to the U.S. Armed Forces. Careers in the Commissioned Corps Unlike an enlistment in the military, the Commissioned Corps isnt something you can jump into right out of high school. But there are a few opportunities to start a career with the Corps for those who need a helping hand. Those already serving in the military may be able to transition to a career with USPHS through one of two educational programs. Aspiring physical therapists with a bachelors degree can apply to attend a doctoral program offered jointly by the Army and Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Theres also the Interservice Physician Assistant Program, which caters to the Public Health Service. As for civilians, students on their way to earning an appropriate degree can apply to serve as interns during school breaks, earning ensign (O1) pay and points toward promotion and retirement they can take with them if hired after graduation.

6 Tips To Ease the Pain of Relocating for a Job

6 Tips To Ease the Pain of Relocating for a Job6 Tips To Ease the Pain of Relocating for a JobIf youve been offered a job in another city or plan to move to greener pastures to look for a job, there are many factors to consider beyond just the job itself. Along with illness, death of a loved one and divorce, moving ranks among lifes top stresses, and I got to experience it firsthand this summer when I relocated from Northern California to Texas. Here are some things I learned along the way1. Hiring Movers is Worth ItI havent asked a friend to help me move since my 20s, and heres why moving is such a pain for me that I have no interest in helping someone else move. Why should I expect others to come to my aid if I do not want to come to theirs? Unless you or your friends are trained to wrap furniture so that it does not get damaged and own a dolly for getting multiple boxes at a time up multiple flights of stairs, leave moving to the professionals.Moving companies though, sometimes sc am people. This happened to me once when I welches charged several hundred dollars more than the estimate. Make sure you read reviews and get a reference or referral if possible.I got rid of most of my furniture and went with a pod through the company Door to Door. Similar services include PODS and U-Haul U-Box. Pricing depends on size of the box and distance moved. Door-to-Door delivered a 5x7x8 pod to my driveway. I packed it, and the company dropped it off at my new residence a week later. It was easy to pack myself because I lived on the ground floor, but my new apartment was 200 steps from the pods drop-off location. I paid a professional mover to unpack the pod and deliver my belongings to the apartment. If you need someone to help you unpack quickly, try Task Rabbit. Unpacking takes time, and living among cardboard boxes is no fun. The sooner you are completely unpacked, the better. Some moving companies pack and unpack for you, but thats never been in my budget. If you are ne gotiating a relocation package, see if you can get the funds for the red-carpet moving treatment.2. Tell Everyone You Are New To TownOnce youre on the ground, youll be in discovery mode, learning the best distributionspolitiks to get groceries, gas, home supplies, haircuts, etc. You may also be adapting to a new climate. While the www and your smartphone GPS will be great guides for getting around, people are even better guides.I told every single person I met that I was new to town. It was how I learned about the best supermarkets, running trails, movie theaters and how I got information about the weather. In my experience, Texans are friendlier than Californians, and I would often chat up cashiers. They were happy to offer advice on whatever I would ask about and offered unsolicited useful pieces of information. Four months in, I still tell some people Im new. Theres still a lot to discover about Texas.3. Make an Effort to SocializeAs a single person who works from home, I had to make a concerted effort to get out and meet people. Meeting people at my apartment complex was easy, but they did not necessarily share my interests. The most important thing I did was join a weekly dance group. Every week I knew I saw at least some of the saatkorn people, and whether or not we got to know each other, the familiarity with like-minded people helped me feel grounded. I also joined Meetup and found several other groups of people who welcomed me.Again, I wasnt afraid to say I was new to town, and people informed me of many other groups and events that arent on Meetup. I also looked on Eventbrite for events of interest, some of which were networking groups. Next Door is also a way to connect with people in your neighborhood.Whether its sports, dance, writing, crafting or church, committing to regular group outside of work will greatly enhance your feeling of belonging to your new community.4. Take Advantage of DiscountsWhen I registered my change of address with the posta l service, I received a package with coupons for stores like Target, Lowes and Best Buy. At 10 percent off or more, these discounts will save you money as you stock up on cleaning supplies and all the random things you will need for you new home. You will probably receive other welcome packets that give you savings on local restaurants and services.5. Complete Administrative Tasks As Soon As PossibleCar inspection and registration, a new drivers license, change of insurance and myriad change of address forms make up the administrative tasks of moving across state lines. Most states have guidelines on how soon you are supposed to transfer your car registration and get a new license. I met many people who took months or even years to do this. If police pull you over for any reason, you could get ticketed. Its just not worth it.Completing all your administrative tasks within 90 days can help you feel settled. I cried when I put the Texas plates on my car after only a month, but I jumpe d for joy when I finally got my drivers license two months later. Officially becoming a Texan made me feel as if I had finally cut ties with California.6. Expect to GrieveI lived in California for 18 years. I knew where to go for hiking, for groceries, for oil changes and haircuts. I had a doctor, a veterinarian and a chiropractor. I had many good friends and was in love with the beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area. While much of the first few months was wrapped up in figuring out where to put things in my apartment and where to go for basic needs, I was also grieving the loss of friends and a place I loved.Every time I saw a picture of the Bay Area from one of my Facebook friends, my heart would break. I had lot of late-night phone conversations with friends in California (due to the two hour time difference). Until I started forming real friendships in Texas, staying in touch with California was a lifeline. All grieving takes time. The excitement of new opportunities and a sense o f discovery pulled me forward. Unless your new place is better in all ways than the old, you will naturally make comparisons and think about the things that are different. Keeping a focus on whats great about the present will keep you from dwelling on what you miss about the past.If you feel youve been stagnating for any reason in your life, moving to a completely different location might just be the answer. And with a national job-seeking tool like Simply Hired at your fingertips, it could be easier to get the ball rolling than you think.

Top Career Lessons We Learned from the 2016 Election

Top Career Lessons We Learned from the 2016 ElectionTop Career Lessons We Learned from the 2016 ElectionTop Career Lessons We Learned From the 2016 ElectionAmerica has voted, and the results are in.Hillary Clinton is elend President of the United States. It was an interesting election to say the least. Typical name calling, stormy debates and conspiracies, real or imagined, engrossed Americans for the past 12 months.Weve learned a lot from the election, and the candidates did provide real lessons we should to take to heart. These blunders, winning strategies and personality traits can help us succeed in the job market. Here are some applicable career lessons to take from this election.Birds of a feather Target your ideal audience.Have you ever wondered why some candidates pay more attention to certain states and completely ignore others? Theyre using a time honored tradition target marketing. geschftlicher umgang professionals, politicians and public relations specialists focus thei r message on the people who are most likely to agree with them. This technique works well in the job search. Our best career advice using an ideal audience? Identify the company characteristics you admire and closely match your own. Do you support the military? Look for companies that provide services to veterans or volunteer with military benefits. Are you interested in the latest technology? Employers who stay up-to-date and rely on their gadgets should be at the top of your list.Working for a company that values the same principles and offers a stimulating environment provides a lasting, more enjoyable experience. Defining these criteria helps to narrow the list of possible companies and create your targets. But dont neglect to consider company size, culture, benefits and advancement opportunities. A pleasurable experience doesnt pay the bills or always provide room for growth.Take your finger off the Twitter Social media can help or hurt. One of Trumps most difficult lessons was s ocial media. He never seemed to get the point. Twitter, Facebook and other platforms are intended to connect like-minded people, advertise potential opportunities and provide relevant, updated news. Social media is leid meant to air your opponents dirty laundry. Take this career advice to heart, especially if your employer is on social media.Badmouthing your colleagues not only labels you as a bully, it can damage workplace morale and lead to termination. Yes, everyone needs an outlet, a place to vent their feelings. Social media isnt the place for those rants. If you feel the need to explode, talk to a friend a friend doesnt mean co-worker or counselor.Being aggressive towards another person isnt the only take away from the campaign. Sometimes posting political alliances or sympathy towards a social group can lead to negative consequences. Not all employers are as enlightened as you. Focus more on family and friends or events stay away from anything that may be controversial or h ave a negative influence on other individuals.Dont hide or titel up your mistakes Honesty is the best policy.Clintons best career lessons taught us its best to face the music. While the evidence isnt clear and there are still answers to seek, we know she wasnt forthcoming with her email fiasco. This mistake plagued her campaign from day one. The question isnt whether she did wrong by using a private server or whether national security was violated. The backlash came from her perceived dishonesty.Employers want team members who face up to their mistakes, take ownership and work to rectify the issue. They understand people will fail and make mistakes. Whats important is learning from those failures. Trying to justify, hide, lie or cover up your mistakes tells employers youre not responsible. Worse still, it sends the message you will lie and cover up mistakes, a dangerous liability to all companies. On the same note, blaming others is just as detrimental to your career. Its easier to p oint fingers when things go wrong. Clinton used this tactic during the Benghazi hearings. This only proved blame and omission are not effective leadership tools. Employers look for leaders who take responsibility and have integrity. They dont want team leaders who will use underhanded strategies to get ahead.Appearances do matter If youre sick, stay home.Pushing onward, even while youre sick, may be a great personal attribute, unless it hurts your image as a strong team member. Clinton learned this the hard way on national television. During the Sept. 9 bombing anniversary in New York, the Democratic nominee decided not to alert her team about a bout with pneumonia. She trudged on and had to be assisted to the car.If youre too sick to get out of bed and drive to your job please call in sick. Employers wont think poorly of you. Actually, the reverse is true. Your throat is scratchy, nose is dripping and head feels like its going to explode no one looks their best while sick. This h urts your image by making you LOOK like youre not capable of doing the job. Think about the last time you saw a sneezing co-worker with red, swollen eyes. Didnt you wonder how they could possibly perform well? Not to mention no one you work with wants to catch what you have.Going to work sick isnt all about appearance either. Sick workers are less productive and cost employers more money. In fact, a recent study conducted by researchers at Queens University found employers spend twice as much on sick employees than they do on healthy ones. Not to mention, sick employees risk infecting others, increasing company liabilities and decreasing productivity.Learning to identify career lessons in everyday life.Looking for career advice doesnt always come from typical career sources. Here are few tips to help you find career lessons in every situation.Keep an open mind. Situational learning comes in all shapes and sizes. Morals from Mother Goose play just an important role in adult problems as they do in early education. Watching a waitress working with a disgruntled patron may provide insight into a recent client interaction. Maybe your childs Little League coach has a wonderful team building strategy. Would it work in your office?Dont resent instruction or advice. We all must learn new skills and strategies. College doesnt cover a third of what actual life lessons or job skills teach. Always accept help from someone even outside your field. One Star Trek Voyager geschehen showed Mr. Neelix, the ships morale officer, solving a complex engineering feat that stumped the ships scientists. He was able to look at the problem from a simpler angle.Keep it or leave it. Not all life lessons translate into great career lessons. You may consider Clintons Twitter strategies, use them in your next marketing campaign and, ultimately, decide they werent applicable. The point isnt whether the lessons and skills immediately help you. Its about being flexible and learning from various situations. Plus, most skills never go to waste. Youll use them eventually.Want to see how your resume stacks up? Try out our free critique today
